Behind the Coaching Website Changes & Improvements – October 2026

Hello Behind the Coaching users, supporters, and readers. It’s been a while since my last discussion blog post, which focused on the NBA coach profiles and sports quizzes. Over the last couple of months, I have evaluated Behind the Coaching as a brand, website, and community through our analytics, search trends, and the initial interactions with our quizzes and articles since the summer began.

Unfortunately, the original NBA coaching profiles project did not get completed within the first deadline I wanted it to. This due to a mixture of personal commitments building up and a lack of pace to give myself breaks in between the massive workloads on the profile end. However, this has given me the opportunity to re-evaluate how that project should be completed and best displayed for our readers interested in the history of NBA and sports coaching in general.

However, since then a lot of planning and construction had been started to introduce a lot of amazing, insightful, and innovative ideas to our website. In this blog post, I will be recapping and sharing all the new changes we have made to the website, our current and future plans for content, quizzes, and the newsletter, and how your feedback can truly contribute to the value of what we bring and deliver on the site.

Website Design & Theme

Of course, we’re still on the same website and platform, but over the last few weeks, we have improved the functionality and accessibility features across our site such as our:

  • Main Page
  • Color schemes for visibility.
  • New Light and Dark mode, located on the top right of the header.
  • Search Bar – Improved to help you find your exact person/topic of interest along with related topics that may be connected to your search.
  • More organized Header & Footers to help you navigate your way around Behind the Coaching.
  • Article Layout & Better Ad Placements to Avoid Interruption.

Article & Profile Layout and Visibility

As mentioned, you will notice that clicking on an article now looks different, such as the one you’re reading now! The table of contents are automatically enabled on the sidebar and will follow you as you scroll up and down the page to help you navigate, especially for longer recaps, profile features, interviews, and more. You will notice on the sidebar, a new ‘Keep Reading’ section which will share the 4 latest articles related to the category/sport that you are reading about. Also, at the end of every article a new section has been added called ‘More from this Author’ which are recent articles and content written and published by that particular author/writer.

Our Coach Profile page design has been updated to accommodate a location for a potential headshot/portrait if we have one available, along with better placements for tenures, coaching philosophy, achievements, and more. One of the key changes you’ll see is on the bottom where if a Coach (for example ‘Terry Porter’) is featured or mentioned in an article related to said coach, that particular article will be added to their archive of pieces on the website.

Ads throughout the site have been experimented with to have better placement and make them less inconvenient for our readers. Behind the scenes, we have filtered our ads to be much more related to sports and everyday life as you may call it. In the last year or so, many advertisers upload and create ads that are misleading and put them in multiple categories that aren’t related to what it’s actually promoting, leading to many slips in the cracks, which has been a Google first issue, but remains our responsibility to lock down as many safe categories as we can for your viewing experience.

Please report any bugs, issues, or inconvenient advertisements to behindthecoaching@gmail.com.

Newsletter / Substack Update

Last year, I mentioned the Substack will still be utilized and functional for Behind the Coaching, after all that’s how and where we got started, thanks to you guys. Throughout the past year, the posts were not as consistent as I wanted and were used for small announcements and weekly article recap when they were available.

Therefore, the plan is once we get more historical coach profiles, yearbooks, and articles complete, the substack newsletter will be sent out on a more regular basis, at the very least, once a month and potentially once a week or every other week depending on the amount of new content that is available on the site, rather than recycling the same topics.

NBA Assistant Coach Hall of Fame

For years, people have had discussions of the most impactful assistant coaches whether it was a topic in a podcast, a small ranking social media post, or simply reflecting on some of the greatest assistants in the Naismith Hall of Fame.

There are still historic and impactful assistant coaches who have yet to make the Hall and we wanted to shine the spotlight on the names who deserve to be seen and heard. We wanted to start the hall off with a strong start, but with enough room to slowly highlight the impact these coaches made on their teams. Therefore, we are starting off with 12 of the most impactful assistants in NBA history, whether they contributed to championship winning teams, developing hall of famers, superstars, or franchise legends, or maybe that coach paved the way for future generations of coaching to leave their mark in today’s game.

The first 12 inductees of the unofficial Behind the Coaching version of the assistant coach of fame are:

  • Bernie Bickerstaff
  • Bill Bertka
  • Bob Kloppenburg (In-Memoriam)
  • Brendan Malone (In-Memoriam)
  • Dick Harter (In-Memoriam)
  • Frank Hamblen (In-Memoriam)
  • Jim Cleamons
  • Johnny Bach (In-Memoriam)
  • Phil Johnson
  • Ron Adams
  • Tex Winter (In-Memoriam)
  • Tim Grgurich

By the end of December 2026, the assistant coach HOF will be expanded slightly and will have a more periodical enshrinement rather than a frequent one. More information will be revealed when available.

NBA Coaching Yearbooks

This is one of the most interesting features we’ve added because compared to our previous coaching directory page, we wanted to find a way to display all our coach profiles by era, decade, team, and more. The idea comes from the traditional sports trading card binders and cards themselves, but our own design for the cards.

Available team books will be colored in while those we’re still working on will be grayed out. It’s as simple as clicking/tapping the book, finding the coach you want to learn more about and flipping front and back for their career, achievements, and impact based on that particular season with the team they’re on.

One of the goals is to develop this template accurately and functioning enough to where we can expand to other sports, but for now, the NBA coaching staffs will be better organized and you will have something and someone to read and learn about while their main Behind the Coaching coach profile is being developed and updated.

As we complete a season, they will be featured on the yearbooks page here on the website. Each retired/historical coach (BTC only does article versions of profiles as the NBA coaches association handles the active coach profile pages) will have their own profile on the site, similar to the ones we have published earlier this year.

New & Improved Quizzes, Quiz Types & Quiz Directories

Since launching our quizzes earlier this May, we have had hundreds of interactions and completions across the basketball, football, and baseball quizzes. I’m glad to say that we are adding and expanding 5 new sports categories and those are Hockey, Soccer (Fútbol), Tennis, Volleyball, and Lacrosse.

We also have new ‘types’ of quizzes across each sport, we started with basic trivia and multiple choice, but now we are expanding to the following:

  • ❓Who Am I? 2 versions of this quiz type include:
    •  Are you able to guess who we’re looking for based on the clues we provide and each clue will get you closer to the real answer.
    • Based on multiple choices, 4 options are given and 1 clue is given
  • 📋Draft Board Recreations (Sport-Specific)
    • Includes historic NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL draft boards that require you to drag and drop the players that were selected with each pick of that year’s draft. The NBA version includes the top 14 lottery picks along with the separate 30 1st round picks.
  • ⬆️⬇️Higher or Lower – Updated NBA historical. Once the WNBA playoffs conclude, we will release the recent 2026 season and its post-season statistics, along with our all-time mode.

Quizzes will be regularly added and monitored to improve the quality and give you a challenge. The draft board quizzes will be released sometime next week in small batches per sport for pacing purposes, rather than releasing 20 seasons at once for every sport and becoming too unorganized. More quizzes and quiz types will be added monthly and quantity will depend on the type of quiz we release.

Thank you to those who have played our quizzes and trivia. We hope you have been having fun and maybe even learning more about the sports they’re related to.

Going Forward

For the rest of 2026, I will be monitoring all the listed changes to maintain the accessibility and functionality of the website, along with adding more NBA coaching yearbooks and coach profiles. You’ll also spot me doing profile articles for currently active NBA assistant coaches as I did back in February and March of this year.

Whenever we have any new quizzes or features in the coming weeks and/or months, we will share it to you via our substack and here on the website.

As always, our team of amazing writers of their respective sports will write articles, stories, and content when they have the time to write. So, be on the lookout and check out the previous work our writers have published.
