2026-2027 NBA Coaching Carousel: Latest News on the Assistant Coaches & Staff Tracker

Hey NBA Fans, Behind the Coaching is bringing back the NBA Assistant Coach Carousel & Tracker for the upcoming 2026 NBA off-season, which will serve as an ongoing updated list of the additions, promotions, and status of each NBA team’s coaching staff.

Whenever an update is made to a staff, this post will be updated with the verified source of said changes. “Remaining Coaching Staff” sections will be added only if their status under a new and incoming head coach is unknown. Coaches who are retained will be indicated with a verified source.

Milwaukee Bucks

On April 23, 2026, Former Memphis Grizzlies Head Coach and Milwaukee Bucks Assistant Coach under Mike Budenholzer was hired as the head coach of the Bucks succeeding the retiring Doc Rivers, it isn’t fully known at the moment who will be retained, replaced, or extended on the coaching staff.

• On May 23, 2026, it was reported by Michael Scotto that St. Andrews will join the Milwaukee Bucks as an assistant coach.
• On May 23, 2026, it was reported that Joe Boylan will be joining the Milwaukee Bucks as an assistant coach.

• Former Boston Celtics player and 14-year NBA veteran Isiah Thomas will be joining the Celtics organization as a pro and college scout.

Atlanta Hawks

• On March 25, 2026, Assistant Coach Ronald Nored was announced as the new head coach of the Butler Bulldogs men’s basketball team, replacing Thad Matta.
• On May 7, 2026, it was reported that Coaching Associate Conner Varney will be joining the Butler Bulldogs to reunite with former fellow assistant coach Ronald Nored per Michael Scotto.

Sacramento Kings

• On April 15, 2026, Sacramento Kings Insider James Ham reported that Assistant Coach Dipesh Mistry will not return to the Kings for the 2026-2027 season.
  • Also on April 15th, 2026, Player Development Coach Jimmy Alapag announced he would not be returning to the Sacramento Kings for the 2026-2027 season.

Orlando Magic

On May 4, 2026, Jamahl Mosley was dismissed as the Head Coach of the Orlando Magic after their defeat against the Detroit Pistons in a 7-game series.

• On May 23, 2026, it was reported by Michael Scotto that Magic assistant coach God Shammgod will join the Pelicans as an assistant for Jamahl Mosley’s new staff in New Orleans.
• On May 26, 2026, During Jamhal Mosley’s Introductory Press Conference, Mosley confirmed God Shammgod, Bret Brielmaier, Dale Osbourne, and Randy Gregory were members of his new coaching staff.
• On May 29, 2026, it was reported that San Antonio Spurs Associate Head Coach Sean Sweeney will become the next head coach of the Orlando Magic.
  • Sweeney has been known for his defensive mind and coordinated the defense for San Antonio under Mitch Johnson and previously the Dallas Mavericks under Jason Kidd.

• On April 17, 2026, Per Shamit Dua, Assistant Coaches Casey Hill and Corey Brewer will not be retained for the 2026-2027 season.
• On April 22, 2026, Jarron Collins will not return to the Pelicans for the 2026-2027 season per Shamit Dua.
• On April 29, 2026, it was reported by ProPelsTalk that Aaron Miles will not return to the Pelicans for the 2026-2027 season. Meanwhile, Mike Hopkins, Jodie Meeks, Greg Monroe, and Brendon Demas will be retained.
• On May 18, 2026, Jamahl Mosley was named the Head Coach of the Pelicans, succeeding Willie Green and Interim James Borrego.
• On May 23, 2026, it was reported by Michael Scotto that God Shammgod will join the Pelicans as an assistant coach for Jamahl Mosley.

San Antonio Spurs

• On May 29, 2026, it was reported that Spurs Associate Head Coach Sean Sweeney will become the next head coach of the Orlando Magic.

Portland Trail Blazers

• On May 14, 2026, it was reported by ESPN’s Anthony Slater that Lead Assistant Coach and offensive coordinator Terry Stotts and Assistant Coach Jerry Stackhouse, who handled the team’s defense will NOT be returning to the Warriors for the 2026-2027 season.

Washington Wizards

• Per Michael Scotto of HoopHype, the Washington Wizards are promoting their G-League’s Capital City Go-Go Head Coach Cody Toppert to an assistant coach position on Brian Keefe’s coaching staff for the 2026-2027 season.
  • Toppert had spent the last 3 seasons as the head coach of the Go-Go and previously held assistant coach positions with the LSU Tigers, Memphis Tigers, Phoenix Suns, Northern Arizona Suns (Now known as the Moter City Cruise), and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
