Hey NBA Fans, Behind the Coaching is bringing back the NBA Assistant Coach Carousel & Tracker for the upcoming 2026 NBA off-season, which will serve as an ongoing updated list of the additions, promotions, and status of each NBA team’s coaching staff.

Whenever an update is made to a staff, this post will be updated with the verified source of said changes. “Remaining Coaching Staff” sections will be added only if their status under a new and incoming head coach is unknown. Coaches who are retained will be indicated with a verified source.

Philadelphia 76ers

• On August 21, 2026, it was reported that Phil Handy will become an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Milwaukee Bucks

On April 23, 2026, Former Memphis Grizzlies Head Coach and Milwaukee Bucks Assistant Coach under Mike Budenholzer was hired as the head coach of the Bucks succeeding the retiring Doc Rivers, it isn’t fully known at the moment who will be retained, replaced, or extended on the coaching staff.

• On May 23, 2026, it was reported by Michael Scotto that Patrick St. Andrews will join the Milwaukee Bucks as an assistant coach.
• On May 23, 2026, it was reported that Darvin Ham will be retained as an assistant coach.
  • Joe Boylan opted to join the Dallas Mavericks as an assistant coach under Dusty May.
• On June 12, 2026, it was reported that Brad Jones and Vince Legarza will be joining the Milwaukee Bucks as assistant coaches.
• On June 29, 2026, it was reported that former Milwaukee Bucks guard TJ Ford will be joining the Milwaukee Bucks as an assistant coach.
• On July 8, 2026, it was reported that Indiana Pacers assistant coach Johnny Carpenter will be joining the Milwaukee Bucks as an assistant coach and head of player development.
• On August 9, 2026, the 2026-2027 coaching staff for the Milwaukee Bucks was announced.
• On August 21, 2026, it was reported that former Bucks assistant coach Vin Baker will join the Miami Heat Coaching Staff.

Chicago Bulls

On June 16, 2026, Tiago Splitter was named the Head Coach of the Chicago Bulls, succeeding Billy Donovan.

• On July 14, 2026, it was reported by Michael Scotto that Rex Kalamian, Jonah Herscu, and Blake Ahearn will become assistant coaches for the Chicago Bulls.
  • Coach Kalamian is known for his defensive mindset during his previous stops with the Bucks, Pistons, Kings, Clippers, Raptors, Thunder, Timberwolves, and Nuggets.
  • Coach Herscu previously served as the Portland Trail Blazers’ G League head coach and was assistant coach for the Blazers main coaching staff and the Sacramento Kings.
  • Coach Ahearn is known for his offensive mindset and was previously the head coach of the Spurs G-League Team and was an assistant coach for the Memphis Grizzlies.

Boston Celtics

• Former Boston Celtics player and 14-year NBA veteran Isiah Thomas will be joining the Celtics organization as a pro and college scout.

Atlanta Hawks

• On March 25, 2026, Assistant Coach Ronald Nored was announced as the new head coach of the Butler Bulldogs men’s basketball team, replacing Thad Matta.
• On May 7, 2026, it was reported that Coaching Associate Conner Varney will be joining the Butler Bulldogs to reunite with former fellow assistant coach Ronald Nored per Michael Scotto.

Miami Heat

• On August 21, 2026, it was reported that Vin Baker will join the Miami Heat Coaching Staff.

Charlotte Hornets

• On August 17, 2026, it was reported that the Hornets are adding John Bryant as an assistant coach.

Utah Jazz

• On June 28, 2026, it was reported by Michael Scotto that Utah Jazz Assistant Coach Mike Williams will be an assistant under Micah Nori for the Utah Jazz.

Sacramento Kings

• On April 15, 2026, Sacramento Kings Insider James Ham reported that Assistant Coach Dipesh Mistry will not return to the Kings for the 2026-2027 season.
  • Also on April 15th, 2026, Player Development Coach Jimmy Alapag announced he would not be returning to the Sacramento Kings for the 2026-2027 season.

Los Angeles Lakers

• On July 17, 2026, it was reported that South Bay Lakers head coach Zach Guthrie will be promoted to assistant coach and head of player development for the Los Angeles Lakers. Guthrie led the South Bay Lakers to a 26-10 record, the best in the G-League’s Western Conference.
  • Coach Guthrie has previous experience as an assistant coach for the Utah Jazz, Dallas Mavericks, and Washington Wizards.

Orlando Magic

On May 4, 2026, Jamahl Mosley was dismissed as the Head Coach of the Orlando Magic after their defeat against the Detroit Pistons in a 7-game series.

On July 6, 2026, The Orlando Magic have announced the assistant coaching staff under Sean Sweeney for the upcoming 2026-2027 NBA season.

• On May 23, 2026, it was reported by Michael Scotto that Magic assistant coach God Shammgod will join the Pelicans as an assistant for Jamahl Mosley’s new staff in New Orleans.
• On May 26, 2026, During Jamhal Mosley’s Introductory Press Conference, Mosley confirmed former Magic Assistants God Shammgod, Bret Brielmaier, Dale Osbourne, and Randy Gregory were members of his new coaching staff.
• On May 29, 2026, it was reported that San Antonio Spurs Associate Head Coach Sean Sweeney will become the next head coach of the Orlando Magic.
  • Sweeney has been known for his defensive mind and coordinated the defense for San Antonio under Mitch Johnson and previously the Dallas Mavericks under Jason Kidd.
• On June 17, 2026, it was reported by Michael Scotto that DJ Bakker, Riley Crean, and Mfon Udofia will be joining the Orlando Magic as assistant coaches.

• On May 19, 2026, Jason Kidd was dismissed from his position as the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.
• On June 22, 2026, it was announced the University of Michigan Head Coach Dusty May would become the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.
• On July 3rd, 2026, it was reported that Joe Boylan, originally set to join the Milwaukee Bucks coaching staff, will be joining the Dallas Mavericks as an assistant coach instead.
• On July 4, 2026, Marc Stein reported that Willie Green and Garrett Temple will be assistant coaches for the Dallas Mavericks.
• On August 21, 2026, it was reported that Phil Handy will become an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Brooklyn Nets

• On April 20, 2026, Head Coach Jordi Ferandez and his entire coaching staff were signed to multiyear extensions.

Denver Nuggets

• On July 27, 2026, it was reported that David Joerger will become the lead assistant coach for the Denver Nuggets.
  • Coach Joerger has previously served as an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks, Philadelphia 76ers, and was the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies and Sacramento Kings.
• On August 17, 2026, it was reported that the Nuggets are hiring Austin Dufault as Assistant Coach / VP of Player Development.

Indiana Pacers

• On July 8, 2026, it was reported that Indiana Pacers assistant coach Johnny Carpenter will be joining the Milwaukee Bucks as an assistant coach and head of player development.

New Orleans Pelicans

• On April 17, 2026, Per Shamit Dua, Assistant Coaches Casey Hill and Corey Brewer will not be retained for the 2026-2027 season.
• On April 22, 2026, Jarron Collins will not return to the Pelicans for the 2026-2027 season per Shamit Dua.
• On April 29, 2026, it was reported by ProPelsTalk that Aaron Miles will not return to the Pelicans for the 2026-2027 season. Meanwhile, Mike Hopkins, Jodie Meeks, Greg Monroe, and Brendon Demas will be retained.
• On May 18, 2026, Jamahl Mosley was named the Head Coach of the Pelicans, succeeding Willie Green and Interim James Borrego.
• On May 23, 2026, it was reported by Michael Scotto that God Shammgod will join the Pelicans as an assistant coach for Jamahl Mosley.

Houston Rockets

• On July 22, 2026, it was reported that Chip Engelland will join the Houston Rockets as an assistant coach under Ime Udoka.

San Antonio Spurs

• On May 29, 2026, it was reported that Spurs Associate Head Coach Sean Sweeney will become the next head coach of the Orlando Magic.
  • Sweeney has been known for his defensive mind and coordinated the defense for San Antonio under Mitch Johnson and previously the Dallas Mavericks under Jason Kidd.
• On July 2, 2026, it was reported that Billy Donovan will be the lead assistant under Mitch Johnson replacing Sean Sweeney.

Oklahoma City Thunder

• On July 22, 2026, it was reported that Thunder assistant coach Chip Engelland will join the Houston Rockets as an assistant under Ime Udoka.

Portland Trail Blazers

With the upcoming head coaching search in Portland, it isn’t fully known at the moment who will be retained, replaced, or extended on the coaching staff.

• On May 23, 2026, it was reported by Michael Scotto that Assistant Coach Patrick St. Andrews will join the Milwaukee Bucks as an assistant under Taylor Jenkins.
• On June 23, 2026, it was announced Minnesota Timberwolves lead assistant coach will be named the Head Coach of the Portland Trail Blazers.
• On June 28, 2026, it was reported by Michael Scotto that Utah Jazz Assistant Coach Mike Williams will be an assistant under Micah Nori for the Utah Jazz.
• On July 6, 2026, it was reported by Chris Haynes that Jay Triano will begin his second tenure with the Portland Trail Blazers as an assistant coach under Micah Nori.
  • Triano was a Blazers assistant coach under Terry Stotts from 2012-2016 and was the Head Coach of the Raptors from 2009-2011. Nori was an assistant under Triano in those 2 seasons.
• According to Joe Freeman of Oregon Live, Assistant Coaches Ronnie Burrell and James Posey will not return for the 2026-2027 season. Meanwhile, Nate Bjorkgren, Quinton Crawford, Pooh Jeter, Leron Black are with the organization as of July 6, 2026.

Golden State Warriors

• On May 14, 2026, it was reported by ESPN’s Anthony Slater that Lead Assistant Coach and offensive coordinator Terry Stotts and Assistant Coach Jerry Stackhouse, who handled the team’s defense will NOT be returning to the Warriors for the 2026-2027 season.
• On July 12, 2026, it was reported by Michael Scotto that Frank Vogel will be the Associate head coach for the Warriors.
  • Vogel served as the lead assistant for Jason Kidd and the Mavericks last season and previously was the head coach of the Indiana Pacers, Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, and Phoenix Suns.

Washington Wizards

On July 6, 2026, the Washington Wizards have announced their coaching staff changes for the upcoming 2026-2027 NBA season.

• Per Michael Scotto of HoopHype, the Washington Wizards are promoting their G-League’s Capital City Go-Go Head Coach Cody Toppert to an assistant coach position on Brian Keefe’s coaching staff for the 2026-2027 season.
  • Toppert had spent the last 3 seasons as the head coach of the Go-Go and previously held assistant coach positions with the LSU Tigers, Memphis Tigers, Phoenix Suns, Northern Arizona Suns (Now known as the Moter City Cruise), and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
  • On June 25, 2026, it was reported by Michael Scotto that Tevon Saddler will be named the Head Coach of the Go-Go, making him the second-youngest G League coach at 31 years old.
• On July 4, 2026, it was reported that Patrick Ewing will be an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards.
  • Ewing previously served as an assistant coach for the Charlotte Hornets under Steve Clifford (2013-2017), the Orlando Magic under Stan Van Gundy (2007-2012), the Houston Rockets under Jeff Van Gundy (2003-2007), and the Wizards under Doug Collins for the 2002-2003 season.
• On July 4, 2026, it was also reported that Steve Clifford will be a Coaching Advisor for the Washington Wizards, previously serving in that exact role for the Phoenix Suns last season and with the Brooklyn Nets in 2021.
  • Steve Clifford also previously served as the Head Coach for the Charlotte Hornets (2013-2018; 2022-2024) and the Orlando Magic (2018-2021).
• On July 5, 2026, it was reported by Josh Robbins that lead assistant David Vanterpool will be moving into a Front Office role for the Wizards while assistant coach Adam Caporn will become the team’s lead assistant (keeping his “assistant coach” title officially).
