Behind the Coaching is keeping track of the NBA assistant coaches that are being fired, hired, and/or relocating to new teams or leagues for the 2025 off-season. This article will be updated whenever a new coaching update happens, so make sure to check back in often!
We’ll also be including Summer league news including assistant coaches assigned to lead their team’s summer league.
Philadelphia 76ers
May 14, 2025: Assistant coach Coby Karl and player development coach Terrell Harris parted ways with the 76ers.
Milwaukee Bucks
Notes
Per Marc Stein, Joe Prunty joined the Orlando Magic coaching staff.
The Knicks have interest in Milwaukee’s Darvin Ham to join as an assistant coach.
Cleveland Cavaliers
June 10, 2025: Assidtant coach Bryan Tibaldi was named an assistant coach for the Providence College Men’s Basketball team.
June 19, 2025: Jawad Williams joins Kenny Atkinson’s staff. Previously an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings under Mike Brown.
Notes
Per Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, associate head coach Johnnie Bryant is expected to remain with the Cavaliers.
Boston Celtics
June 13, 2025: Per Michael Scotto, Celtics assistant coach Phil Pressey was named the head coach of the Maine Celtics.
Memphis Grizzlies
June 30, 2025: Brian Collins is joining Tuomas liaso’s coaching staff to assist with the player development angle. Collins is coming off a Tennessee State men’s basketball head coaching stint.
July 14, 2025: Ryan Saunders will be the lead assistant coach per Michael Scotto.

Adrian Griffin, Jared Dudley, and Dale Osbourne are 3 key names to be liaso’s lead assistant coach.
Atlanta Hawks
June 15, 2025: Lead assistant coach Igor Kokoskov will be named the head coach of the Anadolu Efes in the EuroLeague.
Miami Heat

Assistant coach Eric Glass will lead the Heat’s summer league squad.
Utah Jazz
May 1, 2025: Assistant Coach Evan Bradds was named an assistant coach for the Duke Blue Devils.
June 6, 2025: Salt Lake City Stars head coach Steve Wojciechowski is called up to join Will Hardy’s main staff.
June 17, 2025: Assistant coach Rick Higgins was named the head coach of the Salt Lake City Stars.
June 24, 2025: Chad Forcier returns to Will Hardy’s coaching staff after previously serving as Mike Budenholzer’s lead assistant in Phoenix last season. Forcier was on Hardy’s staff for the 2023-2024 season.
Sacramento Kings
May 3, 2025: Assistant coach Leandro Barbosa is the only holdover from Mike Brown’s tenure.
May 12, 2025: Mike Woodson is the first hire under Doug Christie, as his associate head coach.
May 19, 2025: Bobby Jackson rejoins the Sacramento Kings as an assistant coach. Previously an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers under Nick Nurse.
May 30, 2025: Mike Miller and Chris Darnell are hired assistant coaches. Paul Jesperson is also hired as head of player development.
June 24, 2025: Doug Christie’s coaching staff is finalized per Sean Cunningham.

In a episode of “STRAIGHT GAME PODCAST”, Bobby Jackson reveals he’ll be running the team’s defense, Mike Miller will run the offense, and Mike Woodson will oversee everything.
New York Knicks
Mike Brown was announced to be the next Knicks head coach per Shams Charania on July 2, 2025. This section will be updated as he builds his staff and makes his decision on the remaining assistant coaches.

New Orleans Pelicans associate head coach James Borrego, who has also been interviewed in-person for the vacancy, is open to the possibility of being an assistant coach if Mike Brown is hired, per Marc Stein.
According to Marc Stein, multiple Knicks assistant coaches are likely to remain on staff, including Rick Brunson.
The Knicks have interest in Milwaukee’s Darvin Ham to join as an assistant coach.
Rick Brunson will receive a less impactful role with the Knicks, as Brown is looking for a new associate head coach.
Los Angeles Lakers
July 6, 2025: Justin Robinson is hired as an player development coach.
Orlando Magic
July 2, 2025: Per Marc Stein, God Shammgod is joining the Magic coaching staff as an assistant coach.
July 5, 2025: Joe Prunty has joined the coaching staff per Marc Stein. Prunty is known for his offensive philsophies.
July 10, 2025: Top assistant coach Jesse Mermuys is leaving for the Phoenix Suns on Jordan Ott’s staff.

Dallas Mavericks
June 10, 2025: Jay Triano joined Jason Kidd’s staff as the second lead assistant. After Sean Sweeney’s departure on June 22, Triano is expected to become the first lead assistant per Mike Curtis. Previously was the associate head coach for the Sacramento Kings under Mike Brown.
July 2, 2025: Per Michael Scotto, Frank Vogel, who’s been serving as a coaching consultant for Jason Kidd and the Mavericks will become the associate head coach under Kidd.
July 5, 2025: Mike Penberthy is joining Jason Kidd’s coaching staff.
July 9, 2025: Per Marc Stein, Popeye Jones and Phil Handy are expected to join Jason Kidd’s coaching staff.

Certain Mavericks assistants had contracts that expired on June 30, 2025.
Assistant & player development coach God Shammgod has interest from the Orlando Magic per .
According to Brad Townsend, Sean Sweeney originally didn’t want to leave Dallas, however, was offered more responsibility in San Antonio.
Current assistant coach Josh Broghamer will lead the Mavericks summer league.
According to Marc Stein, with the departure of God Shammgod, Phil Handy is a candidate to join Kidd’s staff.
Per Dave McMenamin, Mike Penberthy is joining Kidd’s staff. Penberthy is a known shooting coach and has a relationship with Anthony Davis from their time in L.A.
Denver Nuggets
July 1, 2025: JJ Barea and Rodney Billups are joining David Adelman’s coaching staff. Barea will be front of the bench.
July 3, 2025: Jared Dudley has accepted the position of the lead assistant coach of the Denver Nuggets.
Notes
The Nuggets plan on speaking with Jared Dudley for an assistant coach position after previously drawing attention from Phoenix and Cleveland.
Per Marc Stein, the Nuggets are in advanced talks for Dudley to become the No. 1 assistant coach to David Adelman.
Houston Rockets
June 16, 2025: Assistant Coach Royal Ivey is expected to remain with the Houston Rockets despite external interest by several NBA teams per Rockets Wire.
With the Kevin Durant trade on June 22, he will be reunited with Ivey, not only a close friend of KD’s, but they were formerly teammates on the Oklahoma City Thunder (2010-2012), along with Ivey being an assistant coach for the Brooklyn Nets during their tenure from 2020-2023.
San Antonio Spurs
June 13, 2025: Corliss Williamson is the first hire under Mitch Johnson to become an assistant coach per . Previously an assistant coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves under Chris Finch for the 2024-2025 season.
June 22, 2025: Sean Sweeney is hired as Mitch Johnson’s associate head coach. Previously Jason Kidd’s lead assistant for the Dallas Mavericks for the 2024-2025 season.

Rashard Lewis will serve as a “guest coach” for the Spurs’ summer league.
Phoenix Suns
June 11, 2025: DeMarre Carroll becomes Jordan Ott’s first assistant coach hire. Previously an assistant coach for the Cavaliers under Kenny Atkinson.
July 8, 2025: Chaisson Allen is retained from Mike Budenholzer’s staff. Former Suns assistant Brian Randall is returning as an assistant coach under Jordan Ott.
July 10, 2025: Jesse Mermuys joins the coaching staff as a top assistant coach.
Notes
David Fizdale’s contract expired and will not be retained under Ott per John Gambadoro.
Assistant coaches under Mike Budenholzer; Chaisson Allen and Schuyler Rimmer attended Ott’s press conference. Indicating they’ll be retained under Ott.
According to John Gambadoro on June 10, 2025, the Suns could look to hire a former head coach for Ott’s lead assistant, Stephen Silas could be a candidate.
The rest of the Suns assistant coaching staff will be filled throughout the month of June, according to Jordan Ott.
The Knicks have interest in Milwaukee’s Darvin Ham to join as an assistant coach.
Portland Trail Blazers
June 11, 2025: Quinton Crawford, Patrick St. Andrews, and Tiago Splitter are named assistant coaches under Chauncey Billups. Leron Black was also hired as a player development coach.
July 10, 2025: James Posey joins the coaching staff. Posey was previously an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns last season.
Notes
Jonah Herscu is now the head coach of Portland’s G-League affiliate, the Rip City Remix. Previously was an assistant coach for Chauncey Billups on the main staff.
Chris Fleming joined Nate Oats’ coaching staff in Alabama. Fleming only spent 1 season with the Blazers for the 2024-2025 campaign.
Former assistant coaches Roy Rogers and Mark Tyndale were not retained.
Nate Bjorkgren and Ronnie Burrell will remain on the staff.
Golden State Warriors
June 18, 2025: Santa Cruz Warriors head coach Nicholas Kerr is called up to join Steve Kerr’s main staff in Golden State.
